Preparing for Vacation Weight Loss

Vacation. Weight loss. How often is it that those two words go together? Pretty much never. Many of us picture vacation as a free for all when it comes to nutrition, and while I agree a couple bites of dessert here and there won’t derail your efforts, it’s your attitude toward nutrition that will enable you to be successful in your fat loss this new year.
If vacation falls into the free for all category along with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, valentines day, Easter, 4th of July, summer cookouts, your birthday, your kid’s birthday, your kid’s friends’ birthdays, co workers’ birthdays, (I think you are getting the picture), then we can get in trouble. If you feel that all these days are free for all days then you will never hit your weight loss goals. You need to be in charge of your body and when you decide to indulge and when you don’t.

All that being said, here is how I pack for vacation:

Which Diet is Best For You?

Gluten free. Paleo. Vegetarian. Low-Fat. Reduced Calorie. Low Carb. Vegan. As If making the decision to be healthy wasn’t hard enough, trying to figure out which way to eat can drive a person crazy! I studied nutrition in college and continue to study it on a weekly basis and even I admit it can be overwhelming with all the nutrition information out there!

So which is the best way to eat? I get asked this question a lot by clients, friends, family and complete strangers once they find out what I do. It is a question that actually has a complex answer. There is not a right way to eat for everyone’s body. We are all different and require different nutrition according to activity level, age, hormones (HUGE factor), gender and genetics, food sensitivities and more.

The TRUTH About Calories

Does broccoli provide negative calories? Are there foods so low in calories that it takes as many (or more) calories to digest them as they contain? That is the myth behind diets that claim help on the weight loss through "zero-calorie" or "negative-calorie" foods.

It would certainly make dieting easier if we could munch on calorie-free foods all day. But other than water and diet beverages, there is unfortunately no such thing as a zero-calorie or negative-calorie food, according to Researches on this subject.

Busting the "Zero-Calories" Myth

Despite from foods that have been engineered / changed to be calorie-free, like sugar substitutes, virtually all foods contain calories. Some foods contain very few calories, and we do burn a few calories when we chew and digest the foods we eat. But the idea that eating certain foods can put us into a negative calorie balance just far from true.

Could You Have Osteoarthritis of the Knees?

Well, According to your answers, it seems like you might have several of the symptoms and risk factors associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.or not ? but It’s also possible something else might be causing your knee pain. Only your doctor can determine this with certainty, so make an appointment today.
Osteoarthritis is one of the top five leading causes of chronic knee pain and disability among elderly men and women.
Osteoarthritis of the knee most commonly occurs in people who have had a previous injury, infection, or trauma to the knee and is more common in women over the age of 50 than men, although both can be affected. It occurs when the smooth, slippery, fibrous connective tissue, known as articular cartilage, which acts as a cushion between the bones of the knee wears away over time, leading to pain. This loss can easily be seen on an X-ray. As the condition worsens, the friction caused by bone rubbing on bone can cause spurs to develop in the knee area, leading to increased pain and swelling. Eventually normal activity, such as walking, can become difficult because of the pain.

The Benefits of Jumping Rope

benefits of jumping rope for fitness and healthA jump rope can be one of the most cost-effective ways to add high-intensity cardiovascular fitness to your workout routine. If you want an inexpensive and efficient workout, the jump rope might be the ultimate "must have" piece of fitness equipment. When done properly, jumping rope can improve cardiovascular fitness, improve balance and agility, increase muscular strength and endurance, and burn calories.

Obviously that amount of calories burned will vary and is based on weight, height, age and gender.  But for those Jump-Rope lovers that are concerned with calories, you can burn 11 to 20 calories per minute!! That's awesome!

Make sure your knee, back and neck are ok first!  Avoid jumping rope on hard ground if you experience any discomfort.  If that is the case, consider doing it on a mat.

Sugar or sweeteners? Which one to choose?

This is a topic of much debate!  Do you use real sugar or are you better off with calorie-free sweeteners? Excess sugar can cause diabetes and lead to extra calories, and excess sweeteners can cause cancer and other issues. Pick your poison! In college I switched to sugar free everything to save calories, but over the past couple years I have learned that these sweeteners may not be all they are cracked up to be!  There are numerous studies out there that show that people who drink diet soft drinks are just as likely or more likely to be overweight than those who drink regular sodas.  There is speculation that these sweeteners make your body not notice calories associated with sweetness... so the next time you eat something sweet it thinks there are no calories associated with it, so you end up over eating on sugar.

Adding artificial sweeteners to our diets have just basically allowed us to think we are making "smart" choices by eating sugar free candy, chocolate, pies, cakes, syrup, coffee, sodas and cookies.. but in reality we should not be eating these things very often anyway!  Yes of course every once in a while, but these should not be in our daily diets.

WHY PEOPLE IN THE MIDLIFE CAN OR USUALLY GAIN WEIGHT ?

scaleFirst, you notice shopping for clothes isn't as fun or simple as it used to be. Next comes the "muffin top" spilling over the jeans. Then the scale delivers dire news: You're 10, 15, maybe 20 pounds beyond your "normal" weight. Midlife weight gain is common. Many Americans gain a pound or so every year as they make their way through young adulthood, ending up fat and flabby at age 40 and beyond.

You can Blame the hormones in convergence with poor lifestyle choices, overeating, not exercising enough, and stress. But hormones only account for about 2 to 5 pounds. The rest is the result of overeating, poor lifestyle choices -- such as not exercising enough -- and stress.

How can I not be one of those people who gains weight???

The keys are three: mind, mouth, muscle. Use your mind to control stress. If you walk around and everything is stressful, you have a problem. You may respond to stress by making poorer lifestyle choices, such as not eating healthfully and not exercising enough.

JUST SLEEP!

Doesn't that just sound easy? SLEEP! It requires no energy or thought, so why is it one of the most difficult things for many of us to do? It is because our American culture says we need to work as much as we can so we can be as productive as possible, which leaves little time to take care of our spouses, our kids, our household, and the many other obligations we have in our lives (with exercise and eating healthy on the top of this list of course!!) This is perhaps why Starbucks is coming out with the TRENTA size coffee! 31 oz! Don't even get me started on this...

Not getting enough sleep may be the missing ingredient if you are having trouble hitting your weight loss goals! When you don't sleep enough, your body thinks it is under stress, then it releases cortisol which is your stress hormone which makes it tough to lose fat. Back in the day when your body was under stress, it meant there were hard times and maybe a famine or natural disaster. The body would then release cortisol so you save as much fat as possible to make it through the rough times of hardly any food. However in today's world, stress does not equal lack of food or starvation, food is still readily available and we eat it!

Don't let excuses sabotage your weight during the Holiday Season!

"I'm too busy....""I have to stay late at work..""My husband ordered an appetizer...""My alarm didn't go off..""I only had time to go to through a drive thru...""I have a sluggish thyroid..."
Believe me, whatever the excuse, as a fitness trainer I have heard them all! I am NOT saying some of these can be hard issues to get past, however we need to push through and figure out HOW to make positive changes!
Making time can be a tough one because we all have the same 24 hours to work with. So we have toa exercise a priority on your to do list! Not everything gets checked off your list and that's OK! But don't let exercise be one of those unchecked boxes! You may have to cut out time from somewhere else for your health. Do you watch tv? Play Farmville!? Maybe you don't have any extra time, but you always make sure everyone else is taken care of and you neglect your health!

The Benefits Of Fitness

There is no question that regular physical activity is good for you and makes you feel better. Not only does it help you burn calories to lose weight, it reduces the risk of conditions like heart disease, stroke, blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Physical activity improves your strength, muscles, bones, and coordination. It improves your quality of life, making it easier to do simple things like walking up a flight of stairs, tying your shoes, or sleeping. Exercise also has many psychological benefits: It helps you feel better about yourself, improves your mood, and allows you to better cope with stress.

Still not convinced? Research shows that the least fit individuals gain the greatest benefits when they improve their fitness levels.

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health, especially if you are sedentary.

Body Mass Index, Calculator (What is BMI?)

While we Americans are supersizing our meals, we’re also supersizing ourselves. More than 60 percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, Inventing many health issues  including an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, varicose veins, and even some types of cancer and etc.

It might sound complicated, but your BMI is just a calculation using the ratio of your Body weight to your height to determine how much body fat you have. It was originally developed in the 19th century by a well-known statistician, Lambert Quetelet, but has undergone changes over the years as scientists learn more about the association between health and weight !

Difference between Burning Calories and Burning Fat

There is a difference between burning calories and burning fat. The main aim of exercising should be burning body fat and not simply burn calories. Light exercise burns calories from sugar and other carbohydrates, also called "energy calories". This leads to a loss of "water weight" and a decrease in metabolism. To target calories stored in body fat, there needs to be a high intensity exercise regime combined with weight training.

Exercising to burn fat

In order to lose fat, you need to keep some basic rules in mind. During aerobics exercises (cardio), the body goes through several stages before it reaches the point where it's burning fat.  For the first 10-15 minutes of exercise, you burn only sugar calories (not derived from fat). In order for your body to utilize the energy stored in fat, you need to reach your target heart rate. This target heart rate is a range that depends on your age and fitness level (beginner, average or higher than average).
